Summer 2020 Fashion Trends – What to Wear Now

by CWstyle

As a personal stylist, it is my job to keep up with the current trends in fashion and translate them into a wearable, approachable version that works for my clients’ life. Well, 2020 has been a bit of a fashion roller coaster, to say the least! If you read last month’s post (here), you’ll see that we swapped trends out for wearing whatever makes you happy. Trends for the season are usually identified 6 months to a year in advance and wow…we really didn’t know what was coming! Because we’re dealing with a whole new reality, I thought I would share some of the Summer 2020 Fashion Trends that you’ll actually want to wear now.

The NEW Summer 2020 Fashion Trends

As the stay-at-home orders went into effect and working from home became the norm, the forecasted trends were basically thrown out the window. I mean, “bras as tops” was actually one of the big trends we saw on the runway last year. But most of us retired our bras all together during the last 4 months and have expanded our wireless and bralette options. So if you are wondering what to wear now, here are the NEW Summer 2020 fashion trends.

Tie-Dye

I know, I know. I’m just as surprised as you are! Tie-dyed pieces emerged as a tentative trend last year, but no one could have predicted its resurgence to such a level this year. The quarantine made all of us crave bright colors and fun, light-hearted prints. That – and the fact that it can be an interactive art project led to tie-dyed pieces popping up everywhere. For me, I went wild with a tie-dye cat sweatshirt, but I also found more elegant and subdued pieces like this beautiful tie-dye dress.

Linen

There are not many big activities on our agendas for the next few months, so easy, breezy is the name of the game for Summer 2020 fashion. Linen has emerged as the fabric of choice since it strikes the right balance – it’s casual, but still feels elevated. Linen keeps you cool in the summer temps and that wrinkling problem has been lessened by the different variations and linen mixes that are coming out.

Babydoll Dresses

Tight waistbands and bodycon dresses are SO OVER. Babydoll dresses are reigning supreme right now. This flattering silhouette flares out around your midsection and hips and it’s easy to move around in – both in and out of your house. Designers are playing around with volume and exaggerated proportions. And you can find them in a variety of bright and pastel hues.

Neon Everything

Neon is another holdover trend from last year that has only gained momentum as we head into summer. You’ll find it everywhere from head-to-toe highlighter yellow jumpsuits to more subtle pops of neon in shoes and accessories. This is a fun, uplifting trend that’s worth experimenting with this summer. The initial color shock can be paired with neutral tones for a more sophisticated look.

Puff Sleeves

The puff sleeves trend is one that was forecasted for this summer and has actually made its way into the mainstream. Voluminous puffs are being added to tops and dresses and come in many different fabrications. This is an easy way to a bit of whimsy and romanticism to your wardrobe.

Slip Dresses

Slip dresses are timeless and elegant and are definitely having a moment this summer. Maybe it’s because they are comfortable and elegant, but don’t feel too fussy. You will find slip dresses that are more informal and are perfect for daywear, and you’ll see others that are dressier and a little more revealing for nights out or special occasions.

Straw Accessories

Woven bags and straw accessories are everywhere – from earrings to bags to shoes! The obsession with straw and raffia comes around every few years, so pull out something you have in the back of your closet or invest in something new. Straw basically goes with everything and has an earthy, boho vibe that works with all of this summer’s trends.

Ok, now for the summer 2020 fashion trends that I’m avoiding…

Bermuda shorts are a big no for me. Speaking as a professional, they are very hard to fit and are not the most flattering cut for many body types. Bucket hats? Why not just put a bucket on your head? In my opinion, this trend will not be around for long, so there’s no need to invest in one unless you are feeling nostalgic. And the last trend that is gaining popularity, but that I just can’t support is bike shorts for any time you are not biking or working out!
