The 5 Coats Everyone Should Have in Their Closets

by CWstyle

It’s coat season! The highs have already fallen into the 40s here in Chicago, and it has my clients scrambling to the back of their closets to pull out all of their cold-weather gear. But just because it’s in the 40s today doesn’t mean that it will stay there! Fall temps are notoriously unpredictable – swinging from low 70s to frosty 30s – sometimes on the same day. That’s why coats are their own wardrobe category here, and one version just doesn’t cut it. These are the 5 essential coats everyone should have in their closets!

1. The Cozy Fleece

Cozy fleece pullovers are a fall and winter wardrobe MVP. They are perfect for running around on the weekends or going from one appointment or task to another. With casual fleeces, anything goes! Wear them with leggings and fun sneakers when you’re running errands or with skinny jeans and boots for a casual weekend vibe.

2. The Leather Jacket

Leather Jackets and Moto Jackets for your fall wardrobe

Leather jackets are probably the most versatile and vital addition to your fall wardrobe. They are super useful for throwing over sleeveless dresses – particularly this time of year. Wear it with a blouse and skinny jeans instead of a cardi or blazer for a bit of edge. I advise my clients to choose a classic color from a quality brand. This is wardrobe staple that will last for years!

3. The Classic Trench Coat

What is more classic than a trench coat? It is essential for every working woman’s wardrobe. Don’t think that you have to buy the traditional khaki color though – it actually doesn’t look good on everyone (me included!). There are so many fun (and funky) trench coats to choose from now! Go for classic with a twist – choose a solid color that suits you and look for special details like leather accents, contrasting piping or interesting seams.

4. The Puffer

Puffer Coats that flatter your body

In Chicago, puffer coats are an absolute MUST. But beware the “sleeping bag” effect! Look for puffer coats that have flattering seams and fit close to your body. You’ll want to choose a color that won’t show dirt and choose a high-quality brand so you don’t have feathers poking you and falling out all winter. If you’re looking for something fun – consider a statement puffer. There are actually some fun printed versions that could really brighten up your day when the winter blues set in.

5. The Dressy/Statement Coat

Dressy Statement Coats

Sometimes your everyday coat just doesn’t cut it. Especially if you’re looking to make a statement, or are wearing a fancy dress! I know that when it gets cold, all you want is to wear your puffer, but if you go through the effort to put on a beautiful dress, the last thing you want to cover it with is a sleeping bag. Don’t make your fancy dress feel bad. Look for a warm, elevated coat with clean lines that hits at your knee or below. Classic A-line or bell shapes work well! Or if you’re looking for a statement coat, you can’t go wrong with faux fur!

A NOTE ABOUT FIT AND TRENDS

These are the coats that everyone should have in their closets, but make sure it fits before you buy it! When you’re looking for the perfect coat to add to your closet, be sure that you pay attention to the fit. The coat/jacket should fit your shoulders in a way that leaves room for sweaters, but not so much that it looks like you’re swimming in it. How do you know if your coat fits properly? Try it on and then lift the shoulder seam from the top until the bottom seam hits your armpit. If it reaches your ears, it’s TOO BIG. It should stop in between the top of your shoulders and the bottom of your ears.

And what coat trends are we seeing right now? Basically, tweed and plaid coats are having a major moment. Bright colors – even neons! – are also on-trend. Oh, and you can’t go wrong with anything leopard print!
