Summer is simply flying by! If you’re like me, you’re busy trying to make the most of these long summer days by rushing from one activity to another. The fewer days left of summer, the more we try to cram in! My clients are prepping for vacations, spending quality time with their family, and attending festivals, farmer’s markets and concerts around the city. I’m helping them beat the summer heat in style with these summer style tips!
Wear comfortable shoes that you can get in and out of easily.
Summer means lots of trips in and out of the house – especially if you have kids! You’re constantly running errands, playing with your kids outside, or even sneaking out to the patio to read a good book. I advise my clients to simplify their life by wearing comfortable shoes that you can get in and out of easily. The key is convenience and speed. Bonus points for styles that you don’t have to bend down to get on your feet! Sandals with Velcro are ideal, or supportive slides. Some of my favorites are Vince Sandals and (would you believe it?) Birkenstocks are back in style. They have been updated and come in a ton of prints and patterns, with thinner straps and new styles.
Invest in simple, easy, cool summer dresses.
You know about my love for dresses. They are simply the best thing to wear on hot summer days when you’re feeling a little bloated or overheated. To beat the summer heat in style, go for sleeveless versions (anything on your shoulders will retain more heat), and choose natural fabrics. Stay away from acrylic and silk, or you’ll be sorry! I advise my clients to choose silhouettes that skim the body and allow for airflow.
Keep a jean jacket handy.
As soon as the temperature heats up, the air conditioning cranks up too. That means you can be pouring sweat outside and freezing to death the moment you step inside your office, a museum, movie theater or store. Keeping a jean jacket or layering piece is handy for the dramatic temperature changes!
Lighten up your bag game.
Keep your big leather bags for winter, they add bulk to your summery wardrobe and increase the “sweat factor.” Now is the time to lighten up your bag game. Go for fun crossbody or belt bags, or choose anything straw, raffia or rattan. Oh, and whatever you do, avoid carrying a light-colored bag when wearing dark skinny jeans or pants or vice versa. Avoid the tragedy of color transfer, which is nearly impossible to get out of light-colored purses!
Shorts are your friend! (I promise!)
Shorts don’t have to be your enemy. Shorts are definitely in this summer, and you shouldn’t be afraid. They come in all different lengths, fabrics, colors, prints, and silhouettes. Even if you feel like you can’t wear shorts, I promise you – you CAN! You just haven’t found the right pair yet. Don’t get hung up on how your legs look in shorts. There is a cut and type of shorts that is flattering to every figure! I rarely have a client that I can’t find at least one pair of shorts for!
Go BOLD with your accessories.
Summer is the time to play around with your accessories. To beat the summer heat in style, go BOLD! Add pops of neon or whimsical shapes to liven up your outfit. A bright shoe or a fun patterned bag or a pair of colorful earrings will do the trick. The key is to have fun and to keep it playful.
If you want a few key pieces to see you through the rest of the summer, let’s set up a quick shopping trip. We’ll get you ready to beat the heat in no time!
