Bralettes as shirts, crocheted clothing, and scrunchies are just a few of the spring trends for 2020. And I must confess…I’m not a fan. As a professional stylist, I help clients find clothing that works for their personalities and lifestyles. Sometimes the seasonal trends align with that…and sometimes, they don’t! So, what do I help my clients shop for when I – or they – hate the current trends?
Go back to basics
You don’t have to be trendy! Go back to the cuts and types of clothes that work for your body type and your life. Shop for those pieces that you naturally gravitate toward and that get you excited when you look at them! Spring basics for Chicago still include sweaters – so choose pastels or bright colors. Florals are always in for spring, so look for floral print dresses that can be worn with tights and boots now or with a light jean jacket in May. This is also the time to shop for fun rain jackets and trench coats. Basically, I am buying anything that screams spring but doesn’t have a scrunchie attached to it.
Double down on your favorites
If you hate the current spring trends, double down on the things you love! For me, I love anything cat-related or bright pink, and I always gravitate toward animal prints. These are the building blocks of your personal, or signature, style. For you, it may be…blue tones or florals if you love them, form-fitting/body con dresses or wrap dresses. Maybe you love neutrals or are more playful and like polka dots. Whatever you love and feels like “you,” you should incorporate into your wardrobe this season.
Experiment with accessory trends
And don’t forget that there are a number of other spring trends that might be up your alley. For shoes, chunky, printed or embellished sneakers are still all the rage. Hair accessories have really come into their own over the last year and are a great way to change up your look without a big investment. (I mean, who doesn’t want a Blair Waldorf moment?!) Pearl barrettes and embellished headbands are trend pieces that can work with just about any style. Just please…no scrunchies!
Overall, don’t feel pressured to embrace trends if you don’t really like them. If you think about the types of clothes that make you feel confident and put-together, you’ll stay true to your personal style and won’t be led astray!
